Canadian Protection System for Refugees and Asylees

Canada offers official assistance to refugees or people in need of protection. It does not matter if citizens are in Canadian territory or abroad, if their safety is in danger, they may be eligible to benefit from the Canadian government's asylum and refugee protection system.

A conventional refugee is a person who is outside their country of origin or habitual residence and cannot return because they fear persecution for reasons related to their profession, their religion, their political opinions, their nationality or their membership in a social group.

A protected person is a citizen who is in Canada and is afraid to return to their country of origin or habitual residence for any of the following reasons:

- She is in danger of being subjected to torture.

– Threats to her life hang over her.

– You are at risk of inhumane, cruel or unusual punishment.

Citizens who find themselves in such situations can request asylum from the Canadian government; unless they are subject to a removal order, in which case they will not be able to apply for refuge.

Upon acquiring refugee status, the interested party will be entitled to the following public services free of charge:

When a person arrives in Canada through an airport, port or border post with the United States, they can claim asylum at the same port of entry.

The immigration officer reviews the case and decides whether the application can be referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB), an independent court that decides immigration and refugee matters.

It should be noted that by virtue of an agreement with the United States, (Safe Third Country Agreement) according to which a refugee must request asylum in the first safe country to which he arrives, if a person arrives in Canada through the border with the United States , you cannot apply for asylum in Canada.  Some exceptions are possible, such as in the case of people with some relatives who already live in Canada or if they cross the border irregularly through “blind spots”.
